Woolly hoglet knitting pattern

JERSEY HEDGEHOG PRESERVATION GROUP      TEL 01534 734340

We sell these knitted hogs at vets and in pet shops to raise funds for the hedgehogs in our care, we stuff them with catnip and a soft piece of sheeting for the cats.  We also make smaller hoglets with toy stuffing inside for school visits and other kids' groups.  If you would like to join our band of knitters, please get in touch so we can give you some wool and needles and help you with the loops if you are having difficulty. Please do not sew up the bodies of the hoglets, leave us to do this, if you would like to sew up the head and sew on eyes and nose (just a couple of stitches of black wool for each) that will help us a lot!  Thanks.

BABY HEDGEHOG KNITTING PATTERN

SUGGESTED NEEDLE SIZES: ONE PAIR 6 AND ONE PAIR 12 (old Uk sizes)

BODY

BEGINNING AT BOTTOM OF HEDGEHOG, CAST ON 10 STITCHES WITH SIZE 6 NEEDLES AND WORK AS FOLLOWS:-

NEXT ROW    :  INCREASE KNITWISE INTO EACH STITCH TO THE END (20)

KNIT ONE ROW

FIRST PATTERN ROW:-

Knit   4,    *INSERT RIGHT HAND NEEDLE KNITWISE INTO NEXT STITCH AND WIND WOOL CLOCKWISE (the opposite way to a plain knit stitch) OVER AND   ROUND TOP OF   RIGHT HAND NEEDLE AND  FIRST (1 OR 2 ) FINGERS OF LEFT HAND TWICE, AND THEN ROUND TIP OF RIGHT HAND NEEDLE ONLY, DRAW THROUGH AS NORMAL STITCH (2 LARGE LOOPS ON OUTSIDE OF WORK, PLUS GROUP OF 3 STITCHES ON NEEDLE), REPEAT FROM * UNTIL ONLY 4 STITCHES REMAIN, THEN knit 4.

SECOND PATTERN ROW:-

CHANGE TO SIZE 12 NEEDLES FOR ALL SECOND ROW WORKING ONLY

KNIT 4, *KNIT INTO EACH GROUP OF  THREE STITCHES LEAVING ONE STITCH AGAIN ON NEEDLE, PULL LOOPS   DOWN FIRMLY, REPEAT FROM * UNTIL 4 STITCHES REMAIN, KNIT 4 (20 STITCHES)

REPEAT  THE LAST TWO ROWS FIVE TIMES MORE (1ST ROW ON SIZE 6 AND SECOND ROW ON SIZE 12).

USE DIFFERENT COLOUR  WOOL EVERY FOUR ROWS  (2 ROWS OF LOOPS IN EACH COLOUR – OR ANY VARIATION YOU LIKE TO MAKE HOGLET COLOURFUL)

PURL ONE ROW USING SIZE 12 NEEDLES.

FACE (USE 2 SIZE 12 NEEDLES)

BREAK OFF WOOL AND JOIN IN ANOTHER COLOUR FOR FACE, THEN BEGINNING WITH A KNIT ROW, STOCKING STITCH 6 ROWS, DECREASING 1 STITCH AT EACH END OF EVERY  ROW UNTIL THERE ARE 8 STITCHES LEFT.

BREAK OFF WOOL LEAVING ENOUGH FOR SEWING UP AND THREAD THIS THROUGH THE 8 STITCHES AND PULL TOGETHER TO MAKE THE NOSE.

YOU CAN LEAVE THE HOG LIKE THIS OR CONTINUE TO:

SEW UP FACE USING THE WOOL YOU PULLED THROUGH THE LAST 8 STITCHES, SEW EYES AND NOSE WITH DARK (BLACK OR BROWN WOOL), PLEASE LEAVE THE HOG LIKE THIS FOR US TO STUFF AND SEW UP THE BODY.

WE PREFER TO USE A VARIETY OF COLOURED WOOLS IN  DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS TO CREATE BRIGHT AND EYE CATCHING EFFECTS, YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN DESIGNS. PLEASE  LEAVE THE BODIES UNSTUFFED AND  RETURN THEM TO US AS “SKINS” WE WILL BE VERY GRATEFUL AS WE CAN THEN STUFF THEM ACCORDING TO WHICH “FLAVOUR” WE NEED AT THAT TIME. CATNIP HOGS ARE NOT FILLED WITH TOY STUFFING, IN CASE CATS GET IT IN THEIR MOUTHS.

Thank you very much for your help.
